What is Medicare?

  • The nation’s largest health insurance program. It provides high-quality health care to:
  • People age 65 and older
  • People under age 65 with certain disabilities
  • All people with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) 
  • Administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)

Medicare has 4 parts:

  • Part A and Part B – managed by the federal government, referred to as Original Medicare
  • Part C and Part D – offered by Private Health Insurance companies with an approved Medicare contract.

PART A

  • Inpatient Hospital Care
  • Skilled Nursing Facility Care
  • Hospice Care
  • Some Home Health Care
  • Beneficiaries can go to any doctor who accepts Medicare

PART B

  • Covered Preventive Care Covered In and Out Patient Doctor Care
  • Outpatient surgery, hospital and emergency room visits
  • Lab fees and x-rays
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Beneficiaries can go to any doctor who accepts Medicare

PART C

  • Medicare Advantage combines the coverage of Part A and B- Original medicare, plus extra benefits.
  • Many plans include prescription drug coverage.
  • Some plans have $0 premiums and deductibles
  • No Part B Deductible
  • Copays and Coinsurance for treatments
  • May include extra benefits like dental, vision, gym memberships, and transportation
  • Plans have a Maximum Out of Pocket feature

PART D

  • Part D covers your prescription drugs
  • Offered by Private Insurance Companies
  • May include a monthly premium and an annual deductible
  • Most include Co-pays and Coinsurance
  • May be purchased as a stand alone plan with Original Medicare
  • Included with many Medicare Advantage plans
